Montenegro lies east of the Adriatic Sea; it is a mountainous, wooded country in the Dinaric Mountains. The altitudes range from a narrow coastal strip on the Mediterranean to Zla Kolata at 2534 m above sea level in the Prokletije massif. In between lies a waterless karst plateau. Only in the southeast are lowlands like those on Lake Skadar. Montenegro has protected almost 10% of its area and established five national parks for it. BirdLife International has recognized five areas as IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas).
