Branded is a chronological narrative of the WWII restrictions on Italian immigrants without U.S. citizenship, who were branded "enemy aliens" at the outset of the war. The story starts with the government's preparations in the days before the war, takes us through Presidential Proclamation 2527 in December 1941 which made 600,000 Italian immigrants 'alien enemies' of their adopted country, and then fills out the narrative of the restrictions, internments, and evacuations that many suffered, taking us to the postwar conclusion. For even after official government confirmation--in Public Law #106-451--that these events took place, large portions of the American public still have no idea that any of it happened; still history texts that omit the truth about what happened to Italian immigrants on the WWII home front. This is because the accepted public narrative of home front violations during WWII has traditionally denied omitted it. It is our hope that Branded will make this 'secret history' accepted and public from now on.
