Breeding Hardy Passion Fruit: Developing new passion fruit varieties for temperate climates in Europe

One of the Holy Grails of Passionfruit breeding is to produce a hardy, heavy cropping cultivar with attractive flowers and tasty fruit, that ideally could be grown, possibly as an annual, as a patio plant in temperate European conditions. This quite extraordinary book by Raphael Maier, both in its scope and generosity in sharing information, is meticulously researched and pools together information from numerous sources in a way that has never been done before. As Raphael notes, the big commercial Passionfruit growers would not be the target audience for any successful cultivars. In the same way that presenting different kiwi fruit cultivars to home growers has been a success, I can see widespread enthusiasm within that market for homegrown Passionfruit. The supply would be fuelled by the European decorative Passiflora growers who would be delighted to extend their market. I wish Raphael luck in his quest.
