Well, Essie, a Black country girl from Savannah, Georgia is back to share her story about what life was like growing up in a Gullah Geechee village. Her memoir starts with the struggles she had speaking with both a speech impediment and a Gullah Geechee dialect at the same time. She was often teased by her peers for not being able to speak standard English and for speaking with a Gullah dialect. So, she buried her head in books. They were her best friends until Miss Brown, her speech teacher, taught her the necessary skills needed to overcome her speech impediment. Essie does an outstanding job of describing the day-to-day life of people living in the village. Her stories go back as far as she can remember. She touches on topics such as living conditions, religion, midwives, incest, abusive relationships, family disputes, adult bullies, infidelity, family reunions, root doctors, prophetesses, mixed children, homelessness, juke joints, gambling, and funerals. You will learn how this struggling community survived and what they are faced with today.
