This is a history of the citizen soldiers of the Massachusetts Bay colony, also known as the militia and trainbands. Until the Seven Years War essentially the militia was the only military force in the colonies. It was the militia which acted as a reservoir of manpower from which England drew troops to fight, primarily against France and Spain. It was the shield against both French incursion and marauding Amerindian attacks. During the First War for Independence it sustained the first casualties at Lexington and Concord and performed various duties as required at a time when there was essentially no police force. It supplied the manpower for the troops of the Continental Line. Emphasis is on the various colonial laws which shaped the militia.
