Comings and Goings: 13,000 Years of Migrations In and Around Rock Art Ranch, Northeastern Arizona: Part 1, Color Edition - 7584

Shop further for the grayscale version of this report. ** People have lived and traveled near what we call the Little Colorado River in northeastern Arizona for at least 13,000 years. Many of them, as people do, left evidence of their presence through both artifacts and artworkpetroglyphs. This report details archaeological surveys and excavations on and near Rock Art Ranch (RAR) conducted over five years by the University of Arizona School of Anthropology/Arizona State Museum archaeological field school. These studies revealed a very different history than had previously been found on the pueblos and area around the ancestral Hopi villages that make up the Homol’ovi Settlement Cluster (HSC) only 20 miles away. As reflected in the rock art in Chevelon Canyon (“The Steps”) on RAR, there was significant use of the nearby landscape during the Paleoindian, Archaic, and early farming periods—occupations largely missing near the HSC area. Also different is the general lack of ceramics and occupations at RAR concurrent with the occupations of the HSC villages, although there is evidence indicating the continued use of The Steps by later Hopi peoples. Richly illustrated with more than 250 figures and 200 tables, this volume explores the RAR area, adding to our knowledge of this remote and, at least archaeologically speaking, largely unexplored region of the American Southwest.
