The first half of the year spirals through a set of concepts that helps transition students to third grade material. The first few weeks are almost entirely a review of second grade standards. The second half of the year spirals through all third-grade skills on a weekly basis to give enough repetitive exposure to build mastery. Each day also includes a word problem and number sense skill to further enhance students’ mathematical thinking. Finally, each week includes a challenge problem for a built-in differentiation piece and to help expand critical thinking. How this works: Each week has a Monday - Friday format where there are a specific set of skills each day along with a number sense component and word problem. Each day is short and sweet! Most students will be able to easily finish each day in 10 minutes or less. This makes it easy to integrate and provides a great supplement to any math program/curriculum the student/teacher is using. Teachers/parents are there to guide and go over the information. At first, this may take a little more time, but because the skills are constantly being spiraled, students begin to quickly pick up on all of the skills needed to go from the introductory understanding of each skill at the beginning to a more complex understanding of each skill as each week progresses. There are student and teacher/parent tracking sheets included to record and monitor the skills' progress of each student from week to week. This book does meet Common Core standards. Many states no longer use “Common Core”, but their new standards are so similar (no real difference in standards – just verbiage in most cases), that I kept the standard identification in the "notes" section for ease of use for parents/teachers. The student pages are free of this. Also, students don't have to solve the math problems using Common Core strategies. This will be a sound spiral workbook for any third grader! Because each day's work is so short, it is easy to integrate into any curriculum whether in the classroom or at home during or after school.
