Young, single, wealthy, and somewhat idle, Emma Woodhouse is now the mistress of Hartfield, where she lives with her father, a hypochondriac and worrier by nature. Only Mr. Knightley and the Westons come to visit frequently, which always leads to long conversations with Mr. Knightley. Emma imagines herself to be a good matchmaker in her circle of acquaintances. Her first interest was in young Harriet Smith, whom she imagined to be with the clergyman Mr. Elton. She tries to bring the two young people together by dint of multiple pretexts. But Emma is not an expert in the things of love, nor in the character of people. She begins to accumulate mistakes, disappointments and surprises, often to her great embarrassment and in a rather comical way. This does not stop her from continuing to imagine unlikely relationships. The last novel published by Jane Austen during her lifetime, Emma is once again a demonstration of her talent. Talent for describing the life and mores of a certain class of the English population, but also for drawing fine, ironic and humorous portraits. A popular work brought to the screen several times, in a large print edition for an easier reading.
