Four for the Road: Some Selected Poems From John C. Krieg - 9834

With the onslaught of the Coronavirus pandemic, I questioned all aspects of my life and confronted my most penetrating reality – that being that before long, I will no longer be living. This prompted a sense of urgency in me concerning these four unpublished chapbooks that I wanted to physically hold in my hands while I still had the use of my hands. The four collections included herein are: Genius or Logorrhea: 20 Long Wordy Poems (2014) Life’s Serenades and Laments (2019) This Might be Good for a Laugh (2020) The Flame’s Final Flicker (2020) My all-time favorite poet, Carl Sandburg, “the poet of the people,” believed that it was the poet’s responsibility to chronicle the times in which he lives. In that vein, and in the interests of issuing fair warning, know that my poetry doesn’t read like anyone else’s poetry. While these poems may oftentimes seem to lack nuance and mystery, I will say in my defense that they are high on honesty and low on flowery lyricism. I am not blunt and literal for any other reason than that’s just the way I am. I could be accused of not really getting poetry, but I will never be accused of the readers not being able to get me. I have long admired John C. Krieg’s poetry, which is so full of energy and passion. He achieves a dramatic balance between humor and fury, narrative and character, politics and compassion.
