The two countries of Japan and Korea share many things, including Confucian and Buddhist cultural heritages and a long history of largely peaceful interactions. More recently the Republic of Korea and Japan have had a close alliance against the Communist states on the Asian mainland during the Cold War era and against North Korea in the post-Cold War years, as well as a mutually beneficial trade relationship since the 1960s. Nonetheless, relations between Korea and Japan have been strained over the past few decades as seen, for example, in a 2018 dispute that resulted in Japan removing South Korea from its list of favored of trade partners and placing new export restrictions on components crucial to South Korea’s semiconductor industry. In response, the South Korean government threatened to withdraw from an intelligence sharing agreement and the South Korean public boycotted Japanese imports. Thus, the difficult relationship between the Republic of Korea and Japan has been source of concern for many people, be they statesmen and diplomats or scholars and journalists. This book represents an attempt to introduce to a wider audience the story of Imperial Japan’s expansion into Korea from the time when Japan forced Korea to open its ports in 1876 up to Japan’s annexation of Korea in 1910. It is a historical survey that seeks to illuminate the international and domestic contexts of both countries and to show how attitudes in both countries changed over time. In the years since the end of World War II, there have been a number of interpretations of Japan’s aggression against Korea.
