Introduction to Power Integrity is written for those electronics engineers, computer engineers, technicians and students wising to learn the basics of power integrity by performing hands-on experiments using commonly available CMOS logic IC's.
All the experiments are constructed on a solderless breadboard with a 2 channel, 200MHz oscilloscope, an adjustable power supply, and a DMM. Some experiments require a sine wave generator.
Readers discover for themselves how and why noise on the power pin of a CMOS logic IC can cause logic to misbehave, how decoupling capacitors behave electrically, and how they improve or sometimes make power supply noise worse.
Each chapter of experiments is preceded by a theory chapter outlining the concepts that are then explored with lab experiments.
The book starts by discussing and experimenting with the ways in which power supply noise affects CMOS input receivers and output drivers, and explains input noise margin erosion, metastability, and the impact power supply noise has on logic timing.
Decoupling capacitors are then explained and experimented with in the time domain where it's shown how inductance causes power supply ringing, and how that's changed by adding capacitance. Separate chapters discuss target impedance and experiment with decoupling in the frequency domain (obtaining the capacitors frequency response). Experiments show how to measure a capacitor's resonance and impedance, and show how using multiple capacitor values alters the impedance profile and creates multiple resonances (sometimes making things worse).
The projects are a one IC RF voltmeter, a current probe that works with your oscilloscope in the time domain or in the frequency domain if your scope is set to perform an FFT, and a simple adjustable edge rate pulse generator.
