Jambo, Kilimanjaro! A Mid-Life African AdventureMagnificent Kilimanjaro greeted us as the jet descended onto the tarmac lined with lighted smudge pots. A fascinating decade of challenges awaited two naïve middle-aged teachers. Neither my husband, Terry, a microbiologist, nor I, a Bible teacher/Christian counselor, had any previous missions experience. In 1997, Arusha was a dusty Wild West town with a bathroom-sized grocery, numerous thieves, and often no water or power. More than once, God’s angelic protection thwarted an enemy’s attack. Being unfamiliar with the Swahili language, we blundered into an army encampment during the first year and later made a desperate attempt to correct heresy as Jesus seemingly burned on the cross during a 16mm showing of the Jesus Film. Culture shock continued as fleas swarmed under my mosquito netting following refugee camp ministry. Our purpose was to teach at a Bible school at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. Accepting a female teacher was a big issue. Tanzanian women are considered property—what could a woman ever teach a man? It was a death experience—until God’s anointing affirmed me. Transformational ministry brought forth a cultural revolution—founding of the first women’s Bible school. God broke through enormous cultural barriers for the fulfillment of His purpose. Christian women now have access to higher Christian education and the freedom to serve with Christian men in the advancement of God’s Kingdom in Tanzania. Jambo, Kilimanjaro! is a reminder of the faithfulness of the living God, moved by the power of prayer, to change desperate situations. Some of these include the ability to overcome witchcraft and soul power from unseen forces by warfare prayer. A dramatic example happened the day our hedge—our first line of defense—was cut. Our dogs—the second line of defense—were poisoned and slowly dying. Things got even worse when the power and phone lines were cut. While crying out to God for protection, men suddenly arrived, lighting up the compound with their lanterns. They remained until daybreak worshipping and praying. Within an hour, God sent another missionary to warn us of a diabolical plot to destroy us. He stayed to move us out—immediately! Whether snakes in our house or a sign from a black-mane lion, God’s guidance and protection were obvious in hopeless situations. Ministry stories include our orphanage and a miraculous breakthrough with the unreached Barbaiq and Hadzabe tribes south of the Serengeti. The salvation of the first Barbaiq leader was a true redemptive analogy! Our adventures include lighthearted stories involving cultural faux pas or our train trip to Victoria Falls—where in the depths of a game reserve, the primitive smokestack train engine suddenly plowed into a buffalo, catapulting us from our sleeping berths! Believing God for a way of escape and breakthrough in the midst of horrific trials is a predominant theme. Whether attacks by baboons or the enemy, the reader will laugh and cry as they vicariously experience the cross-cultural craziness that surrounds the life of ministry on a foreign field.
