Welcome to Laboratory Exercises in Biological Diversity: The Eukaryotes, First Edition. This laboratory manual is designed to support a one-semester course in the diversity of eukaryotic life, including protists, plants, fungi and animals. The content in this laboratory manual can support a variety of courses, including a course on biological diversity for biology majors, a general education course on biodiversity, or a course for education majors who need experience with the diversity of life.
The materials in this lab manual grew out of exercises I produced to support my course on biological diversity. I generated those materials because of the skyrocketing prices of laboratory materials available from traditional textbook publishing companies. And I am happy to be able make this set of exercises available through Amazon's self-publishing platform at a small fraction of the cost of most commercially available lab manuals.
This lab manual includes chapters on phylogenetic analysis, microscopy, and the diversity of protists, plants, fungi and animals. The chapters on biological diversity focus on the functional anatomy of selected representatives. These exercises include instructions for dissection and/or observation of selected specimens. The goal of these exercises is provide students with opportunities to have first-hand experiences with a wide range of the diversity of life, and to develop the observational and scientific thinking skills used by professional biologists. The representatives in this lab manual were chosen because they are commonly available from biological supply companies or can be obtained locally.
