This is a revised and retitled edition of a dictionary originally published in 2016, the new title more accurately reflecting the contents. The formatting of the headwords used for Luganda nouns and adverbs has been modified to make them easier to find and clearer explanations given of the equivalence of words and concepts in the two languages. This new edition has been approved by the National Curriculum Development Centre of Uganda for use at all levels of education. His Royal Highness Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the Kabaka of Bugagnda, writes in a foreword "It is with exceptional enthusiasm that I welcome [this] undoubtedly important book ..." and Oweek. Nankindu Prosperous, Minister for Social Services in the Kingdom of Buganda, comments "Professor Hamilton has bridged a very big gap in the acquisition of both Luganda and English in Uganda, and of Luganda in the rest of the world ... a full reference book providing up-to-date information. It is simple to use at all levels of learning." The dictionary contains over 9500 Luganda and 9000 English headwords, concentrating on commoner words in each of the languages, though, in the case of Luganda, also including words of special cultural significance. A Luganda grammar is included to indicate how to use Luganda words. Luganda is the most widely spoken of the 42 indigenous languages found in Uganda. It is the mother tongue of the approximately 7.4 million Baganda living in the country, probably the indigenous language most commonly used as a lingua franca and spoken by a sizable number of Baganda who have settled abroad. On the other hand, English is a global language and the required medium of instruction in schools in Uganda at all but the most elementary levels. The quality of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural understanding between English- and Luganda-speaking people in Uganda will be an important factor determining the course of the country's development.
