This book is my story—one that begins in north-central Kentucky, where I grew up surrounded by poverty and instability. As a child, I often felt powerless against the circumstances that seemed to control my life. The cycles of eviction, financial struggles, and systems that failed to support us left me with a deep sense of shame and frustration. Despite all of this, my mother’s resilience became my guiding light. She faced these challenges head-on, doing the best she could with what little we had, and that strength inspired me.
As I grew older, life didn't get any easier. I faced setbacks like losing my job after being caught up in a fraud investigation, followed by a severe mental breakdown. But rather than letting these struggles define me, I made a conscious decision to take control of my life. I sought therapy to face my past traumas and to heal. Therapy became the turning point where I began to confront the layers of abuse—physical, mental, sexual—that had shaped my insecurities and held me back.
Through therapy, I learned the importance of education, persistence, and self-discipline in reshaping my life. These tools helped me heal and grow, and they gave me the strength to rise above my circumstances. Today, as a mother, I carry those lessons with me. I’m committed to breaking the cycle of silence and stigma in my family. I openly discuss the struggles I’ve faced with my children, teaching them that no matter how tough life gets, we can always rise, learn, and grow stronger together.
