We’re in a global economy and there’s no turning back. Pandemics and bouts of isolationism notwithstanding, businesses of all sizes are increasingly looking to international markets for growth…as they should. The opportunities are vast, and, with ever-expanding advances in technology, communication, and logistics, increasingly attainable for even the smallest venture. Equally true, however, is the reality that competing in international markets is difficult. Most daily business challenges experienced here at home—whether strategic, commercial, or operational—are amplified many times over abroad. There are simply no short cuts. Success requires thoughtful, pragmatic planning and relentless focus on execution. In Outbound, Mathew Segal distills his learnings gathered over years of helping companies expand globally into an easily digestible, practical guide on international business. His goal is to help the reader avoid pitfalls and maximize chances for success by providing: Practical frameworks to guide strategic decision-making about the where and how of international business Real-world coverage of key tactical considerations such as pricing, incoterms, trade agreements, finding customers, and risk management A wealth of resources and tools to support realization of international growth objectives Relatable case studies and examples, based on first-hand experience, to add context to the topics covered Whether you’re an executive, consultant, attorney, service provider, student, or anyone else interested in the topic, Outbound will serve as an invaluable resource as you continue your own journey into the world of international business. About the Author Mathew Segal has spent more than two decades—both as an advisor and operating executive—helping companies grow shareholder value, with a focus on international expansion. After spending several years in Singapore leading the international business for a leading US battery manufacturer, he founded Terrafirma Strategy in 2019, a niche advisory practice focused on strategic planning, international growth, and acquisition due diligence. His approach to strategy blends the rigor of management consulting with deep hands-on international business management experience. Mat received an MBA with Honors from the Anderson School at UCLA and a BA in Political Science from Northwestern University. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife Nancy, and three kids - Ivy, Tessa, and Tate.
