Prison Chaplaincy and Christian Engagement in Multi-Faith Culture - 2272

Active, humble Christian engagement of today’s multi-faith culture should take place everywhere, including the religiously diverse prison. Christians cannot serve effectively as Christ’s ambassadors among religiously pluralistic culture if operating from a posture of detachment. This project studies how accurate witness of Christ within today’s multi-faith prison culture requires active, humble engagement. This study ventures behind prison walls for those who might not otherwise have the opportunity, and explores multi-faith engagement there. The paper first claims that effective Christian engagement of contemporary multi-faith culture necessitates an active, humble witness of Christ Jesus; second, describestoday’s multi-faith prison culture from the vantage point of a full-time prison chaplain; third, investigates existing literature on prison chaplaincy; fourth, provides a biblical and theological basis for this project; fifth, offersa practical tool for prison chaplains intended to help equip new and prospective prison chaplains from all faith backgrounds through a written artifact entitled “A Chaplain’s Prison Jacket;” sixth, field-tests the tool by assessing the written artifact in conversation with diverse voices associated with prison chaplaincy; and lastly, closes with lessons learned through the qualitative ethnographic research process.
