But after seven and a half years of chronic illness, all I could see in every direction was a parched and hopeless valley. A desolate land incapable of life. Like the valley of dry bones in Ezekiel 37, my own heart was filled to the brim with bones of pain, anger, confusion, hurt, and doubt. How vast and dry they were! But believing that the Lord could only love me if I were joyful and happy, I’d shoved them down into this single, contained valley for years. So when Jesus invited me to walk among these burdened hills of my heart with Him, I was terrified. What will He do when He sees these hidden parts of me – when He really knows me? But as He removed His sandals, preparing to step onto the holy ground of my suffering, I knew that I didn’t have to be afraid.
