SARAH OF SYCHAR Eleven-year-old Sarah lives in Sychar with her father Jacob, a devout Samaritan. Her mother’s death during childbirth when she was six leaves her an only child. The loving relationship she shares with her father does not extend to her uncle Hashum’s family. Jacob supplements his farm income by making trips to Jerusalem to sell dates from Jericho. When he dies, Sarah is left to cope with life in her uncle’s household—and with the town busybody. Occasionally, bypassing the town well, she finds solace in trips out to Jacob’s Well, over a half mile from town. She marries a young man her father had selected and enjoys being a wife, but she is distressed by her childless state. Her husband’s accidental death leads to four other marriages under a variety of circumstances, ending for four different reasons. None produce a child, adding to her grief. Between her third and fourth husbands, she finds employment as a maid/caregiver for the invalid wife of a Samaritan merchant in the regional capital, Sebaste. Fleeing the marriage to her fifth husband and his disrespectful children, she seeks haven back in Sychar. She is take in by a widowed childhood friend. Guilt for adultery drives her to Jacob’s Well, where she meets Jesus and finds forgiveness and peace. She returns to Sebaste and finds employment at the palace. Later she meets Procula, wife of the governing procurator, Pilate. Sarah transfers to the palace at Caesarea to serve as personnel attendant to Procula. When the official couple makes trips to Jerusalem, Sarah accompanies Procula to visit the Temple, her first experience with the Jewish religion. She witnesses the couple’s involvement with Jesus’ crucifixion, His resurrection and, later, Pentecost. She meets disciples in Sebaste, and later in Caesarea, and has occasional contact through the years. Sarah continues to serve Procula. Pilate’s confrontations with the Jewish leaders over the years are a continued source of contention, eventually leading to Pilate’s recall to Rome.
