There are two discourses in the Gospel of Mark One is overt and visible; the other one is covert and invisible. You need something like X-rays to see it. *** Repressed Memories and the Return of the Repressed Freud discovered that we instinctively repress the memory of events that are or become threatening and intolerable. He also recognized that repressed memories return, not overtly but covertly, and can be used to identify what had been repressed. In those cases, the mind plays hide and seek with us. It hides very important memories, but at the same time it tells us in the form of subtle clues that we should look for something that is hidden. This mental activity takes place in the unconscious part of the mind that represses those memories. It takes a mind reader to recognize this dual activity. In what pertains to what happened during the life of Jesus, only an eyewitness could have known about important events that would have rendered the faith in Jesus Christ, the risen Son of God, untenable. Once that eyewitness became sure of the resurrection of Jesus, he repressed all memories that would have rendered that faith untenable. My reconstruction of the incident in which Jesus scolded Peter and called him Satan shows that this violent confrontation did indeed take place. I see in it a return of the repressed. But the context in which the return takes place is misleading. It has no relation to an alleged prediction of Jesus’ death and resurrection. It is related to the meals in which thousands of people took place. Those meals were not improvised miracles but organized rituals. The disciples recognized in Jesus another Moses and wanted to make him king. When Jesus rejected the idea, Peter intervened. He urged him to seize that unique opportunity and accept the Messianic crown. Jesus became mad at him. He rebuked him saying, “Away from me, Satan. Your ideas are incompatible with God’s views.” This shows that Jesus did not see himself as a Messiah. He was made Messiah after his death and in spite of himself.
