Throughout the West, elk are rapidly adapting to the changing patterns of predation and are returning in large numbers to their traditional habitat in low elevation areas as observed by Lewis and Clark over two hundred years earlier. With over 100 Figures and Tables, this book will show you why you need to think and hunt differently and how this knowledge based understanding can lead to identifying and finding elk hotspots in non-traditional habitats. Additionally, in this book detailed hunting tactics and approaches are provided to enable you to develop a uniquely different hunting plan to dramatically increase your odds towards tagging a trophy bull elk. Topics covered in detail include the following: o Why modern reality can and often does trump conventional elk hunting wisdom o Understanding fall transitional patterns and why elk are becoming non-migratory o Comprehensive drivers of elk behavior through the lens of predation o Elk redistribution in the West and their view of humans as “antipredatory” shields o Detailed understanding and analysis to locate Low Elevation Hotspots for elk o Habitat, food, and water requirements where apathetic elk may be found o Novel strategies to get over the counter, draw, and special hunting elk tags o How to plan and successful pull off a guided or do-it-yourself (DIY) elk hunt o Stealth Hunting Tactics to successfully hunt wary elk dialed into human predation o Advanced recovery methods for wounded elk including Stalk Ambush tracking o Bonus sections on hunting Shiras Moose, whitetail deer, and mule deer This book will forever transform your views about finding, hunting, and recovering bull elk in the changing environment of the Rocky Mountains of the West, where there are too many elk in not the right places! From The Author “The book is written for anyone who has ever dreamed of hunting and harvesting a trophy bull elk in the West with detailed hunting tactics and approaches provided enabling a uniquely different elk hunting plan, focused on hunting elk in non-traditional habitats at low elevation. It was a big challenge to write this book since elk are very complex, are incredibly adaptable, and have a keen ability to learn. Furthermore, elk are a species which are deemed by biologists to exhibit a “high degree of individual behavior plasticity”. This makes it especially difficult to understand the fall transitional patterns of elk since elk are often not going to be found in the best habitat. In fact with respect to habitat choices the best descriptors are that elk are apathetic and unattached and, because of this, their survival instincts will often override any tendencies to show allegiance to a particular area or pattern. In order to understand elk, I had to delve deep into how elk think, focusing on how memory and collective memory are key factors in herd behavior and survival. In this book, I explain in detail how modern reality can and often does trump conventional wisdom with respect to elk behavior, elk location, and elk hunting tactics. I combined my DIY experiences hunting elk for the last 25 years and personal observations of elk throughout the year while living in the West with an extensive study of ~100 detailed scientific papers focused on elk biology, elk behavior, and GPS radio collar locations of elk movements. To clearly explain these findings, I have included 100 Figures, 16 Tables, and 57 technical references in this book. I think that this book focused on elk and elk hunting is truly unlike any other book previously written.”
