The Carbohydrate Effect: A Tribute to Dr Wolfgang Lutz - 8570

'Should carbohydrates form the mainstay of our diet? Are they the rightful main source of our energy? Does this actually fit with our heritage or with the inherent design of our bodies?', asks Dr Lutz, as he ponders the seeming erosion of our health by what he calls The Carbohydrate Effect. Austrian-born: Dr Wolfgang Lutz (1913-2010) was an outstanding scientist and doctor of medicine, who became a Consultant in Internal Medicine in his forties. Over the next fifty years, he carefully watched the outcome of carbohydrate restriction on himself and on his many patients. I was privileged to have the help of Dr Lutz in understanding his ideas over a great many years. His thinking was challenging yet his method of treatment straight-forward and effective. How could I share this with others new to this approach and in straightforward non-technical language? Perhaps through the simplicity of a child? So I created a fictional setting in which Dr Lutz became my ‘Uncle Wolfi’ and I, his inquisitive young ‘niece’, Sparrow who keeps asking very basic and probing questions. The narrative and setting are imaginary, yet the exploration of ideas is genuine, as are the descriptions of the way the body works, of Dr Lutz himself, references to his therapeutic work and his suggested way of eating, to his books, his humour and his devotion to the wellbeing of his patients. The Carbohydrate Effect (formerly Uncle Wolfi’s Secret) explores how to think about the type of food to eat; it supplies us with the tools to look critically at the many myths that abound in this field; it explains why the observations made by Wolfgang Lutz are of fundamental importance to our health.
