The Father Trimester gives a holistic, Afrikan view of childrearing from the spiritual perspective of Black mothers and fathers. Centering the life-giving power of breastfeeding as essential to childhood development, The Father Trimester departs sharply from westernized narratives of childrearing to inform Black fathers on how they can best contribute to the strengthening of family bonds and supporting their partners in their initiation into motherhood. Part autobiographical and heavily researched, this book is exclusively written for parents of Afrikan descent as it includes several full color photographs and personal accounts of their journey in nourishing their child in the earliest months of life and what that looks like while living on the rich continent of Afrika. As a mixture of information relevant to both the prenatal and postpartum period, The Father Trimester aims to instill confidence in Black families to home birth. Also included in the book is a list of empowering pregnancy and labor affirmations for Black women. The uniqueness of this work derives largely from the fact that it was written by a Black man, with the support of his wife who had recently given birth for the second time, frustrated by the lack of diversity in a birthing literature industry dominated by white women. A few of the topics covered in the Father Trimester include: The Role of Oxytocin in Building Sisterhood The Biopsychosocial Factors of Labor Pain and Preventive Measures Preventive Measures Against Postpartum Depression in Black Women Intentional Unmediated Touching, The Father's Role in Preventing Early Pain and Trauma in our Wives and Babies. And Many More Coming out of an american social environment where traumatic birthing practices constituted the norm, the author wrote this book in an effort to create space for the physical, psychological, and spiritual healing of all Black families. This is necessary in lieu of the increasing rates of infant and maternal mortality haunting the Black population in the states. For these reasons, the Father Trimester is a vital resource not only for Black fathers but for Black mothers as well in promoting healthy, balanced relationships.
