They are not as well known as the Cornish, and most came from non-mining backgrounds, but from the early 19th century onwards the Irish made significant contributions to the developing mining industry in the United States, Australia and elsewhere. They achieved notoriety as prospectors, miners, labor leaders, managers and owners. Some were among the best at what they did and became fabulously wealthy. Others mined briefly and moved on to succeed in politics, business and public service. They were mobile, ambitious, socially conscious and generous. many died prematurely or were disabled from workplace accidents and respiratory disease. They excluded Chinese from good mining positions and the violence of a few tarnished the legacy of their labor struggles. The stories can be heroic, funny, sad, distressing and heart-wrenching.
