Pyle was born in Wilmington, Delaware and studied at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He became well known for his illustrations of classic literature, such as those in the 1883 edition of The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood. His illustrations of pirates and buccaneers were also popular, as evidenced by his book, The Buccaneers and Marooners of America. In addition to his illustrations, Pyle also wrote and published several books of his own. His works included Otto of the Silver Hand, a classic children’s novel, and The Wonder Clock, a collection of fairy tales. He also wrote biographies of famous historical figures such as King Arthur and Charlemagne. Pyle was also an influential teacher. He taught at Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry in Philadelphia, and later at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He had a profound influence on many of his students, such as N.C. Wyeth and Frank Schoonover. Pyle’s work was a major influence on the development of American illustration, and he remains an important figure in the history of American art. His works continue to inspire artists to this day.
