"How often have those who observe God’s providence cried tears of joy as they’ve seen its wise and unexpected results! And after seriously looking back on the events of their lives, how often have they been convinced that if the Lord had allowed them to choose what they wanted, they would have chosen torment, or even death, for themselves!" In The Mystery of Providence, John Flavel teaches his readers a new way of looking at the world. He wants Christians to see that every good thing and every hard thing is sent from the loving hand of God for their benefit. Packed with biblical insight and practical helps for believers, this book teaches us to pay attention to God’s providence in our lives and how God expects us to respond to it. John Flavel has a message for every Christian who feels that they have a hard lot in life or who wonders why God is treating them so harshly. This edition is unabridged, but the English has been carefully updated. This means that all of Flavel’s original meaning is here, but put into a form that is much more accessible to people living three and a half centuries after he wrote. A new generation of Christians would be tremendously strengthened by hearing what John Flavel has to say. John Flavel (c.1627–1691) was an English Puritan Presbyterian minister and author. After studying at Oxford, he ministered in Diptford, then in the seaport of Dartmouth, where his preaching was warmly received. The Act of Uniformity in 1662 forced him to carry on his ministry in secret. The next decades were full of narrow escapes. In 1672 he was Flavel wrote Divine Conduct, or The Mystery of Providence Opened in 1678. Six volumes of his written works were published after his death.
