In the fall of 1976, nineteen-year-old Samba Faye arrives in New York City from Senegal, where he had worked as a tour guide and interpreter for James Brown, the Jackson Five and several other popular artists, singers, and politicians. There w as even a NY Times article about him and his command of several languages.
America has always captivated his imagination, promising unparalleled opportunities. He arrives with a diplomatic position and an abundance of funds, ready to immerse himself in this cultural melting pot.
However, Samba is unprepared for America's darker side, where freedom can lead to self-indulgence. His wealth fuels a high and frivolous lifestyle, and he soon finds himself lost in a world of loose women, lavish parties, and expensive indulgences. His dedication and aspirations wane, and he succumbs to the allure of cocaine. This marks the beginning of his downfall, leading to the loss of his job and the love of his life, Cloé, who could not compete with his addiction. Disillusioned, he flees to Los Angeles.
In LA, Samba's life continues to spiral downward. He moves between seedy hotels, seeking solace in the company of dope dealers and addicts. His addiction escalates to crack, and he faces three arrests. Becoming an informer for the LAPD offers no real salvation. A glimmer of hope appears when he meets Wendy, a former user who sees his potential. However, Samba corrupts her, turning her into a dependent lover who relapses into drug use.
Desperate to save herself, Wendy cuts Samba out of her life. This leaves him destitute but with a newfound ache of guilt for having hurt two women who loved him. This guilt drives him to enter rehab, where he achieves a triumphant recovery and rebuilds his life. He finds success in the medical liens business and joy in sobriety, yet he remains unfulfilled, longing for the love and intimacy he once had.
Unexpectedly, Samba meets Mitsuko in Tokyo during a visit. Their relationship seems like another fleeting conquest until Mitsuko becomes pregnant. Her life falls apart as her family disowns her for being impregnated by a foreigner. Samba faces a choice: abandon her or step up. In a moment of epiphany, he realizes that life is not just about his comfort but about providing love and humanity to those in need.
Samba brings Mitsuko to America, loving her until she stops hating herself. They have a daughter, Midori, and marry. Strengthened by his new family, Samba successfully runs for a Senegalese Senate seat, using his position to help others and bring them from darkness.
