• ‘Excellent… deserves all the readers it is sure to have’ NEW YORK TIMES • #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR William Porter had just inherited Twin Hollows, an isolated lakeside mansion shrouded in mystery and doom. The first death seemed a natural one. The second, in spite of its violence, cold have been an accident. The disappearance of Maggie Morrison could have been due, as the police claimed, to the grim work of a twisted murderer. But none of these theories explained the dim figure at the foot of the staircase, a figure which could not be there, but was. William saw his dead uncle quite clearly by the feint, steady light of the red lamp... ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Mary Roberts Rinehart was a best-selling and much-admired American murder mystery writer of the first half of the twentieth-century. Although known as the ‘American Agatha Christie,’ she began writing much earlier than her English rival and in her heyday was far more popular. She was also once the highest paid author in America. Credited with inventing the phrase ‘the butler did it,’ her costumed super-criminal ‘the Bat’ also inspired Bob Kane’s creation BATMAN. Born Mary Ella Roberts in Pittsburgh in 1876, she was driven to writing to make ends meet after her family ran up large debts in the stock market crash of 1903. In 1908 she published her first novel, THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE, which sold over a million copies and propelled her to national fame. She would write over fifty more, hundreds of short stories and sell over 10 million books. She died in 1958. PRAISE FOR MARY ROBERTS RINEHART: ‘Rinehart is a natural-born story teller’ NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE; ‘Each murder mystery that Mary Roberts Rinehart writes seems at the time to be better than those that have gone before, and this one is no exception. How does she do it?’ NEW YORK TIMES; ‘No one has ever turned away from any one of Mary Roberts Rinehart’s stories until they had finished the fascinating tale’ BOSTON POST.
