Thirsting for Authenticity: Calling the Church to Robust Christianity is now available in a second edition at a reduced price. The content remains essentially the same, but the format and font are new. The book now appears with endnotes rather than footnotes, which gives each page a much trimmer appearance and actually reduces the number of pages.. I think Paul may have had our times in mind when he made this appeal to the church in Corinth: “Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame” (1Corinthians 15:34). His imperative “awake” is a call to wake up from a state of mental and spiritual “inebriation or drunkenness.” Embracing wholeheartedly this robust kind of awakening is crucial, if the church is to have a redemptive ministry in today’s world––a world described prophetically by David with these words: “The nations and the peoples” rage and plot rebellion. “The kings and the rulers” take their stand and take counsel together “against the Lord and against His Anointed [His Messiah], saying, ‘Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their cords from us.’” (Psalm 2:1-3). This is our world. Thirsting for Authenticity seeks to describe what this kind of world looks like in the twenty-first century, and what the body of Christ must believe and do in order to meet the missional challenges of such a world. We develop this thesis under three headings: 1) Resetting our Rudder in a Post-Christian, Postmodern World; 2) Reaffirming the Essentials at the Center (the heart of the book); 3) Recovering our Spiritual Vitality.
