This Side of Paradise tells the story of Amory Blaine, a young man from the Midwest who goes to study at Princeton University in New Jersey where he experiences love and heartbreak for the first time. He has been raised with high ideals about honesty, integrity and honor but soon realizes that these ideals do not necessarily apply in the world that he is about to enter. It is a coming-of-age novel about the transition from youth to adulthood. Amory's adventures and romantic experiences at Princeton show him that there is more to life than what he has been raised with. He learns some tough lessons, but his heart remains hopeful as he continues to seek the true meaning of love. The story itself has many autobiographical elements based on the life experiences of the author during his time at Princeton University although some events are clearly exaggerated for dramatic effect. Critics have praised this book as one of the most important novels of American literature for its portrayal of youth and optimism but also criticized it for being too insubstantial and showing little emotional growth despite Amory's large emotional swings between love and heartbreak.
