One need not look for a signature in a painting by Pino. The artist's touch has a style and sensitivity so distinctive that he is described as a "magician with a brush." His paintings stand apart and above. From his adoration of human form and flesh with its myriad colors, mysterious shadows, and seductive highlights to his bravura brushwork both aggressive and precise, Pino is a genius at conveying introspective moments when a person is embraced by the joys and sorrows of life. Pino's goal is to lure viewers into the psyches of his people. It may be a single individual, such as the woman of "A Moment of Rest", or it may be the relationship between people, such as the mother and trusting child in "Tender Moments". Telling much of the story, and not yet all of it, the paintings give viewers just enough information to delve into their own emotional memories, fostering a three-way relationship between the viewer. the subject, and the painter that is as intimate as Pino's strokes of oil on canvas. An Italian painter who has settled in America, Pino lovingly recreates the scenes of his European youth with exceptional skill and operatic expression. Faces and figures are reproduced with a vivid realism reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelites, yet these images are clothed in impressionistic swirls of surprising patterns and contrasting colors that manage to soothe and shock simultaneously. It is perhaps Pino's obvious love for these two seemingly conflicting methods that makes them harmonize so effectively in his paintings; the result is an original artistic format that he further enhances by devoting it to subjects he adores. Pino's work has been described as "romanticized realism", but perhaps one should say that he does not romanticize but rather glorifies the virtues he brilliantly captures: a child's innocence, a mother's devotion, a woman's love, all expressing his reverence for the human form and family.
