The first book, NEVER GIVE UP, by Robert J. Gannon, dealt with overcoming difficult experiences in childhood and beyond. It contained stories of hardships that strengthened and brought self-esteem to many broken-down and abused persons. In addition, spirituality and amazing comradery of a Recon unit in Vietnam were detailed. This second book, TURN IT AROUND, focuses on people who have overcome challenges, including growing up in addicted families and suffering from physical and mental disabilities but achieving great goals. Amazing stories herein range from a little girl who got up off the couch and ran, placing third in the Missouri State Track Meet, a felon who worked for a great company that gave him a shiny, new truck to drive, and also a story about prisoners baptized in this author’s horse trough. How about the author bicycling cross-country alone at 48 years of age? Many stories about real-life heroes will bring tears to your eyes and warmth to your heart. Then there was the man, disabled by polio, who hand-carved a huge carousel for all kids to ride for free. Unfortunately, he died before he finished his own book titled HOW TO NEVER TO GROW UP. There is a truly incredible documentary included at the end of this book about the same Recon unit as in the first book who became the most decorated small unit in American history for their bravery in the Battle of Howard’s Hill, Vietnam, 1966.
