Vera Cruz: Borderland Boogie - 4943

Vera Cruz is an attorney with the Mexico Attorney General's Office in Mexico City. She's convinced, after years of research, that the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which in 1848 transferred half of Mexico's territory to the United States, is invalid. But before she can begin legal proceedings, she is sent to the U.S. border to investigate the death of a local policeman and a flurry of bizarre drug-related crimes. She must find the cause before open warfare erupts. Meanwhile, powers are at work in Washington D.C. and the highest ranks of corporate America to redefine the border to suit their interests. Cruz has strong allies, however, including a historian with Mexico's Institute of Anthropology and History and a senior DEA agent. Cruz's quest takes her on a risky path of chance encounters with crime bosses, corporate big shots and political operatives (and perhaps an Aztec god) as she tries to stave off the violence at the border.
