We are very honored to publish our first issue of VISIONS with an interview with His Holiness Sakya Trizin. His Holiness gave this interview to John Tade in Rajpur, India in 1976-77. Since then this interview has appeared in other periodicals, and also published as a booklet, which is now out of print, by Boston Sakya Center in 1981. The first part of the interview is a brief biographical account beginning with his birth into the Khon family on September 7, 1945 at Tsedong in Tibet. It continues covering his childhood, spiritual training, his flight from Tibet during the communist occupation, up to 1976 when he visited and taught Tibetans in different refugee settlements in India. The second part covers the basic teachings related with common foundation practices in Buddhism. In the third part, the essentials of Mahayana practice of generating relative and ultimate Bodhicitta is covered. In the fourth part, the Vajrayana practice of Deity yoga and other essentials are explained. The fifth part has clarifications about general Buddhist teachings and practices. "The Perfection of Meditation" is a teaching given by Khenpo Appey Rinpoche at Sakya Tenphel Ling, Singapore and translated by Ngawang Samten. This teaching begins with the definition of the perfection of meditation. Then Rinpoche explains in detail antidotes for the causes of distraction, which is the main obstacle of meditation, and how worldly, Hinayana and Mahayana meditations are the methods to overcome the distraction directly. Rinpoche further gives instructions for developing Mahayana meditation according to the Madhyamika tradition, and concludes with the benefits of meditation in this life as well as in future lives. "The Great Song of Experience" is composed by Jetsun Rinpoche Dragpa Gyalsten (1147-1216) who is the third founder master of the Sakya tradition. This Song is principally concerned with view, meditation, conduct, and the result, Buddhahood. This song is translated from Tibetan into English by Acharya Migmar Tseten and Kunga Namdol.
