In the necessary, Ginny took her pitch from the droning flies, then launched into a melodic humming of a tune of her own design as she watched a spider spinning a web in the quarter-moon cutout in the door.
“Well, Mister Spider, them there flies will multiply faster than you kin eat ‘em!” Ginny’s learning was more from nature than from the one-room school house on the knoll across the meadow, and the Ozarks still shaped her speech. Pa had brought Ma and Ginny west after the Cause had failed, but poverty and the entrenched drawl kept them branded by the Stars and Bars of the recent unpleasantness, now almost a quarter century in the past. The creatures God had created were kinder than the children that gathered from the folds of the hills and the bottom lands along the streams, coming from board houses that wore coats of paint. Ginny was the only child who lived in a dug out. Like the ground squirrels, her home was a burrow in the earth. She was Ginny, but the other children called her Whistle Pig, after her squirrel friends by the boulders. Toby didn’t.
Toby Mason lived on the hill beyond the pond in the willows. His home was on the top of the hill, a board house with white paint and green shutters beside each window. The door did not sag. Cows grazed on the hillside below the house. Each morning, Ginny’s rooster and Toby’s had a crowing contest. On school mornings, Toby followed the path across the pasture. He would climb the stile over the pasture fence, and disappear behind the willows that bordered the pond. His path merged with Ginny’s, and once, when they met at the merging, Toby slowed his determined pace to walk beside her.
Delight as the two children grow to maturity. Pathways meander through time, and intersect at the most unanticipated moments and places. Experience the forces that lead to reconciliation, even in cases deemed most hopeless.
