Why and How I Became a Zen Buddhist: From the Search to Putting Zen into Practice

Beginning in 1997, I was introduced to a unitive way of viewing reality, a reality of non-duality. This was the core of what caught my eye about a Zen Buddhist way of perceiving. I have since then pursued my passion of not only exploring and learning more about Zen Buddhism, but also, more recently, applying the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) to the practical side of my life by actually putting Zen Buddhism into practice. It is a journey worth every moment. Zen Buddhism is endlessly fascinating from a philosophical and psychological standpoint, even though it is neither a philosophy nor a psychology. Nonetheless, it has the most penetrating set of philosophical and psychological analyses regarding life that I have yet to come across. Neither is Buddhism a religion, although it has some spiritually rewarding aspects to it. As a result of my diligent studies and gradually putting Zen Buddhism into practice, it has become much easier to embrace the facts of life, such as impermanence, death, transiency, non-solidity, ambiguity; and to graciously accept life on life’s terms – my reckoning and resolve toward the existential lay of the land. I’m feeling more psychologically grounded and liberated as a result. With zazen (sitting meditation) and analytical (contemplative) meditation now becoming prominent in my life, I have garnered greater security. It has been a gradual awakening for me – from the Search to putting Zen Buddhism into practice.
